Hypcar?? What’s that?

In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and alternative transport options, internal combustion engine cars can sometimes feel like relics of a bygone era. But genuine classic vehicles—those that have long since moved beyond daily commutes—are not just ageing gracefully; they’re transforming into sought-after collectibles that enthusiasts are absolutely passionate about.
It may seem paradoxical, but it all clicks when you view these stunning machines as cultural icons that embody our automotive heritage while still delivering thrilling, exhilarating driving experiences. Among the classic car lineup, certain models stand out for their groundbreaking advancements in technology and design: enter the hypcars!
Hypcars or Hypercars?

From a tech perspective, a good number of these cars could genuinely be labelled supercars, or as some prefer to call them, “hypercars.” This classification would be justified even in terms of performance, as a Citroën SM with just a boosted engine has been known to exceed speeds of 325 km/h! In our context, however, we use the term “hypcars” to spotlight vehicles that feature suspension systems combining fluid and gas. At Hypcars©, we primarily celebrate hydropneumatic Citroëns while also showcasing exceptional British and German models produced in limited quantities, with even fewer surviving examples. Our ultimate goal is to broaden the project’s scope to include other vehicles with unconventional suspension systems, which are detailed in our Hypcar History section.

It’s All About Suspension

Often overlooked, the suspension system is the unsung hero of any car, connecting it to the road while juggling multiple key responsibilities. First, it ensures that passengers don’t feel like a bag of potatoes on those bumpy backroads (that’s all about comfort). Next, it prevents the car from doing a wild Maasai jump while dodging potholes (we’re talking about protecting the mechanical components). Most importantly, it ensures your ride stays on track through twisty corners and allows it to stop on a dime, regardless of the conditions or load (that’s the essence of safe roadholding).

A Website Guide

We created this website knowing that many print and online resources are dedicated to the incredible cars featured here. So, Hypcars© isn’t about meticulously detailing every aspect of each car, instead, it highlights their conception, history, innovative features, and our perspective on their curation. For the nitty-gritty technical info, you can check out dedicated websites or the books listed in our Hypcar Library. And to the Citroën diehards who may not find here every specific detail they’re after: fear not, as we still have plenty of cool content, including fresh photos of iconic Citroën models that you’ll love!
