Looking After the CX

Let’s start with some fantastic news: the engines, transmissions, and hydraulics of the CX are impressively reliable. However, it’s wise to keep an eye on the Diravi steering system, as it can occasionally develop internal or external leaks. Over time, the hydraulic fluid return hoses may dry out and crack. Additionally, the front suspension rods and bushings, along with the rear suspension arm bearings, may require replacement after all these (at least 35) years.
There is a caveat: the superstructure and subframe can be susceptible to rust. Therefore, the first areas to check are the underbody, wings, and boot. The interior trims, plastics, and upholstery—particularly the fabric—might not age as gracefully as one would hope. Electrical issues may also arise as cables and sockets wear out, leading to rusty ground points.
On the bright side, the CX boasts a high survival rate, making it relatively easy to source second-hand spare parts for restoration and maintenance. Many mechanical components are re-fabricated and may even be compatible with other French vehicles from that era.
